In the weeks leading up to the arrival of Pope Francis in the US, he’s already started to receive a lot of love.
But not from barbers.
A video released by the Vatican on Thursday shows Pope Francis, accompanied by his family, blessing the Barbershop Barbers, a small shop in Madrid, Spain, as part of the first-ever blessing of barbershops.
It was filmed in front of a crowd of pilgrims, many of whom are nuns.
“I’ve got to say that I’m really impressed, because I’ve never seen anything like this in Spain, with the Pope, with all the pilgrims,” said Francisco Márquez, who has been working as a barber for the past three years in Madrid.
“This is something that has never happened before, this has never been done before.
And I’m proud to say it’s the first time that the Pope has visited a barbers shop in Spain.”
The video shows the Pope being welcomed by his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as by his parents, the Pope’s brother and his sister, the first to visit the shop.
The Pope also gives the barber’s son, Miguel, a kiss on the forehead before giving him a “thank you” for his work.
“You have to take the first step to the next step,” said Márrquez, adding that the Barber’s Barbers will keep working as long as they have their customers.
